Acoustic Blues 'n' Roots

Biography

Nestled in the 'Cobargo Delta' on the far south coast of NSW, Australia, lies "one of this country's most accomplished blues songwriters and guitarists"
Bruce Elder, Sydney Morning Herald

"One of the best Australian entertainers... I've seen in the last two years would be Damon Davies"
Neil Mumme, Promoter of the Great Southern International Blues and Rockabilly Festival

Damon emerged from the Sydney Blues scene as a unique performer. After co-founding The Mudsteppers Jug Band, with Damian Coen, Damon was soon working with some of Sydney's leading blues musicians, such as Jim Conway and Pete Burgess (Backsliders), Bridie King, Mic Conway, and Ron and Jeff King (Foreday Riders). Some of these collaborations featured on Damon's first recording, "Ride This Train" (1995); a superb exploration and reinvigoration of classic blues songs from the likes of Fred McDowell, Booker White, Charlie Patton and Sleepy John Estes alongside some equally powerful originals. At the end of '95, Damon relocated to the small rural village of Cobargo on the far south coast of NSW.

In 1997, Damon was awarded Best Male Artist at the Australian Blues Awards and in the same year he recorded "Serious, Man" which was voted Best Australian Blues Album in the Rhythms Magazine Readers Poll, and gained national radio airplay on the ABC. Eleven of the fourteen tracks are originals, stylistically moving further afield amongst the various roots genres.

In addition to these 'solo' recordings, Damon's songs have appeared on numerous compilation releases, such as "ABC Airplay - Music from ABC Local Radio" and "Real Australian Blues Vol. 3". He has supported a range of international artists, often culminating in on-stage 'jamming' (John Cephas and Phil Wiggins, Rory McLeod , Kristina Olsen, Steve James). He has been featured on the ABC TV series "Blues at Bridgetown" and spent two years hosting a half hour live radio show, "South East Sounds" on South East Regional ABC Radio.

Damon has entertained audiences at most of Australia's leading blues and folk festivals and in the major cities in China. His third recording, "People with Oomph!" was released in October 2002 through Blackmarket Music. It offers 14 tracks of acoustic blues groove music, 13 of which are originals, and features the fantastic W.A. connection of Ben Franz and Konrad Park on upright bass and drums - with guest appearances from Peter Grayling on cello and Ron King on harmonica. "People With Oomph!" furthers Damon's exploration of his unique rhythmic slide guitar style and songwriting skills. From the title track 'People with Oomph' to the 'instrumental with words', 'Big Bug Shuffle', Damon covers a huge expanse of musical ground, reminiscent of his impressive live performances.

Always searching for new possibilities and boundaries to venture beyond, Damon Davies has the ability to entertain audiences like few others; his guitar playing is rock solid; his vocals endearing; he certainly has a passion for his calling.

Damon's renowned performing prowess has been captured on disc from his 'last' appearance at the Dromedary Hotel, Central Tilba, April 27th, 2003. One night of mad-cap, up-beat, down-home, wild n wooly performance, preserved on to Compact Disc. Damon Davies, "Wild and Wooly", Live at the Drom.
