'Damon Davies - "Wild and Wooly" - Live at The Drom'
There is little doubt that Damon Davies is at his best in front of a live audience; spontaneous lyrics; oomph to burn; diversity; plenty of goofiness; intimate; and a sincerity to warm a cold winter night. This recording brings the listener right in to what is a wonderful performance at the 115 year old Dromedary Hotel (in Central Tilba on the far south coast of NSW).
Recorded live to mini-disc on Sunday, 27th April, 2003, this album reveals an evening full of memorable moments as only Damon, (and 'The Drom') can provide. Of the 18 listed tracks, 3 could be called 'bonus selections' (featuring some creative Cubase editing...) and of the remaining 15 tracks, 8 are previously unreleased by Damon.
Some live favourites, like "Take Five" (called "Take That"...) and "Pick A Bale of Cotton" (even though the mini-disc ran out just before the end!!) are included; "Tom's Blues" gets a lyrical shake-up and features Damian Coen's highly distinctive harmonica playing, whilst the opening song "My Last Gig" has entirely improvised lyrics (so don't read too much between the lines!). There is a Slide guitar instrumental medley - "Slidham"; a rendition of Johnny Cash's "Get Rhythm" (via Ry Cooder of course); an unusual vocal effort on "The Cowboy Song"; the Tom Waits cover "Heart of a Saturday Night"; a musically improvised poem, "In The Room" written by Julie Davies (Damon's wife) ; and renditions of "Curly Hair", "What Is It", and what proves to be a slightly too fast rendition of "Hesitation Blues", along with the three title tracks from Damon's previous releases.
It's probably no surprise to anyone who knows Damon, that he played a full game of (south coast) competition soccer and then, with all speed and haste, made his way to Central Tilba, set the PA to "sounds OK", tuned the guitars, plugged in the mini-disc - with John Small supervising (thanks John!), turned on everything he could find to turn on (although forgetting to plug in a room microphone - the instrument mic did well enough), and hence produced over three hours of music over a five hour period, with the help of some friends!
On the technical side, there was no separate mix for production purposes, although Damon, at Planet Mars Recording Studio, happily accepts all responsibility for the sounds you hear - except for the feedback - there were too many children!... It is probably worth noting that overdubbing and auto-tune, though perhaps considered, were not used. If you have any inquiries about anything really, feel free to do so! (through email of course).
